LEVEL 3 · READING PRICE · BOOK 5

Picks up exactly where Reading the Economic Calendar (Book 4) leaves off, and opens Level 3. The earlier books built the frame — what the instrument is, what you risk, when the market is awake, and when it is scheduled to move. This is the first book about what the chart is actually saying, from a single candle to a pattern built over weeks.

It is also the first book in the series with pictures of shapes in it, and shapes are seductive. The catalogue in the middle is a reference, not a strategy. The chapter that changes outcomes is the one about location.

  • The two measurements that replace every adjective — body-to-wick proportion, and the candle against its last ten neighbours (no indicator required)
  • Fifteen candle patterns, not sixty: doji, hammer, shooting star, marubozu, spinning top, engulfing, harami, tweezers, morning and evening star, soldiers and crows, inside and outside bars
  • The same candle at three addresses: at a marked level after a completed move, in open space, or mid-range. One is an event; one is decoration
  • The zoom illusion and the spread floor — how a stretched axis makes a quiet Tuesday look like a crisis, and the wick size below which you are reading quote noise
  • The four-filter checklist — trend, level, size, confirmation. Four yeses or no trade
  • Twelve chart patterns: double tops and bottoms, head and shoulders, triangles, wedges, rectangles, flags and pennants — with breakouts, false breaks, measured-move targets and where the stop goes
  • What the research actually says, without a fake win-rate table: near a coin flip in isolation, better when filtered, and why a precise invalidation point matters more than accuracy
  • The five-step session loop and a grading card that turns this field guide into your own evidence

Tested, not just taught. We tested the hammer and all twelve chart patterns on recorded prices from Bacchus Analytics' own systems — more than 19,000 patterns across currencies, gold and stock indices, each against random entries with the same stop and target. As a group, chart patterns did no better than chance. Large double tops, double bottoms and rectangles did better, and the edge grew on four-hour, daily and weekly charts; the head and shoulders did not. The method and its limits are printed in full.

Full-colour diagrams, a one-page pattern table, a printable filter card, eight ways to lose money with a correct pattern, a glossary and sources. Assumes only the books before it — no indicators needed.

Next: Book 6, Indicators Decoded.
