A major dealing bank's conditional order book — 9,655 orders, over $55bn — shows the clustering directly: stop-loss buy order value in the ten ticks above a round number runs at 17.0% against an even spread of 10%, versus 7.3% in the ten below. The finding is the asymmetry, not the level, and the book is careful about the difference.

That pool is substantially made of retail orders, and the money moves away from the people placing them. Six firms' published levels for three dollar pairs, tested against 10,000 bootstrapped control sets, bounce 60.8% of the time against 56.2%. The strength ratings did not predict, and agreement between firms added nothing. One exception, from our own data: levels that had already held four or more times held the next touch 56.5% of the time, against 50.3% nearby.

Intentional stop-running is documented once, narrowly, in five regulatory Final Notices totalling over £1.1bn — and the sentence that matters says the traders knew the size, direction and level of those stops because the clients had placed them with those banks. On longer daily histories of 37 markets, the 1995 Turtle Soup version of the sweep did no better than random entries up to 2012 and somewhat better since 2013 — a recent tilt, not yet an edge. Their own description of what that achieves is worth the chapter: it reduces information leakage.

There is no tape — and the book is precise about what that does and does not mean. Aggregates are published, but they are estimates: a three-yearly survey of more than 1,100 dealers across 52 jurisdictions, six regional committee surveys that cannot be added together because they count by different things, and individual venues reporting only their own flow. More than seventy-five venues exist. The central bankers' own phrase for the market is that it is crucial and inherently opaque.

Order flow really does explain the price. In the study that started the field, flow and the interest differential together account for about 64% of daily variation in one pair — against under 1% for the interest differential on its own. But the forecast needs the day's realised flow, which you do not have until the day is over, and the authors say so themselves in a parenthesis the published version dropped.

The relationship is a plateau with a peak, not a slide: strong from one minute right through the week, strongest around daily, fading only at a month and beyond.

Large orders are sliced by execution algorithms whose published purpose is to avoid leaving distinct patterns that pattern-recognition can find. Across three distinct datasets and four independent analyses, one of them over eight million large orders, price relaxes to roughly two thirds of peak by the close and then keeps decaying for weeks. The fastest complete reversion found anywhere takes about a dozen days.

And the square-root rule everyone quotes has edges nobody quotes.
